5 Perks of Pen-Palling

Have you ever thought of having a pen-pal? Or maybe, several pen-pals? I have a few and I can tell you that if you enjoy writing and getting to know people and culture, pen pals can be really great. It's an amazing feeling to send and receive postcards from strangers around the world, but beside postcards, you can also make great friends. How? Well, by writing about you, your life and your emotions. It might sound old school and most people don't do it anymore, but I like writing letters to someone with your own handwriting.

In the pen-pal community there are certain trends right now, so here are the perks of having pen pals?

Goodies!

Some pen-pals send goodies in the mail! Yes! stamps, fridge magnets, chocolate bars, tea bags, planting seeds, bookmarks, beauty products sample kit, folders, art decoration consists of famous people quotes, calendar, movie and subway tickets, wooden postcards, bracelets, earrings, piece of bohemian art wallpaper, etc.

The most common ones are the ones that are easy to put in envelope. So, for the tea for example, basically you can try many kind of tea from many countries without traveling to those places. Though this comes first in this list, the goodies are not even the best part.

Appreciation and Culture

A postcard that is sent by a pen pal tells me a lot about their hometown and lifestyle and it helps me to appreciate my own life and to get to know life on other cities and even countries.

Receiving many postcards and letters from people who live in the other side of the world makes me feel that we are all citizens of the world.

Too many hours I spent adoring their culture, there's no space for judgement and prejudice.

Stamps

Even if you are not a collector, you can be tempted to start collecting stamps while pen-palling, especially when you become pen pals to people from another country.

Ask and Tell Something That You Can't Ask Face to Face

You might not always be able to ask certain things face to face to a new friend or you might be scared to talk about certain topics also face to face, so a letter makes this easier.  Conversation starters cannot ask a stranger that you meet on a street about what he does for living, his favorite musicians, whether he has pets or not, but when you write to your pen pals, these topics are the basic starters of conversation.

The Treasure

Having a pen-pal means that you will receive things, sometimes things that you will cherish the most. Something that, 20 years from now you will still remember and call it as your treasure. Something called friendship.
